Milan, Italy: Il Ristorante Trussardi Alla Scala [2M*]

02 July 2010

Il Ristorante Trussardi Alla Scala is the pride and joy of the Trussardi Group of fine dining and fashion, having been awarded two Michelin stars in the short span of just two consecutive years. There must be something special about this place that has sparked its inspiring rise towards culinary greatness, and it was only fitting that I find it out myself while living the high life in Milan.

Il Ristorante Trussardi Alla Scala is helmed by the talented Chef Andrea Berton. While towering over his kitchen staff and me (and basically everyone else in the restaurant), his charming smile and affable personality was something that warmed up the atmosphere immediately. This is the "friendly giant" who seemed very delighted indeed to have some foreign company in his humble abode. Singapore of course is nothing exactly "foreign" to him, as he had only just returned from the World Gourmet Summit that was held in... Singapore.

The setting here is modern and elegant, but also not over the top. I especially like the way the tables are spread out so much so that you get to have your own space and privacy to enjoy your food. I managed to get a table with a view of the Piazza Della Scala, and while it is nothing spectacular, it does has its own aura of serenity that completely sets you at ease. Perfect.

In some ways this was like a dinner to celebrate. The trip had turned out really well and we were on to the final couple of days in dear Italy. What better way to wrap things up than with dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant? Moreover it did not turn out to be as expensive as I thought it would be, and it was not even close to what I was spending splurging on the designer brands anyway. Money well spent, that's what I would say.

We got the Blanc de Blancs Brut 1995 champagne to start us off for the night. I'm no wine or champagne expert but there's definitely a good balance to this Blanc de Blancs and it didn't come off as overpowering in any way. We delighted ourselves in the colourful Crackers as well, almost like surprised but happy children.

The Seaweed Spaghetti with Anchovy is not something I would want to remember, but I still can and I still do. This was a cold appetiser that slid down my throat uncomfortably, and I have to admit I couldn't appreciate this as much as I probably should. Acquired taste perhaps, but it did leave a fishy aftertaste that got me reaching for more champagne.

It's a good thing that the Breaded Cod Fish Breadstick that came after that was much more delicious. It's terribly simple no doubt, but the fresh breaded fish inside was really something quite special. This was a good add-on to the freshly baked and soft breads that were being served throughout the meal.

The appetiser of Grilled Scallops, Ginger Marshmallow, Cream of Coral and Lime with Crispy Peanuts was very unique and in a league of its own. No one would have expected such a medley of well-seared scallops, ginger marshmallow and cream of lime to go so well together, but that's what makes Chef Berton so creative and talented indeed.

I loved my main, I think it came straight from heaven. The Roast Breast and Braised Leg of Nantaise Duck was superbly divine, with such unrivaled tenderness that's almost unbelievable. I patiently savoured every single forkful of the duck and secretly wished the portion wasn't all that small. It's what some may call a little piece of heaven, and here I had three little ones all to myself. Hurriedly taken pictures cannot express even a hundredth of the happiness that I was feeling.

On a choice between vegetables and potatoes, it's a definite no-brainer on what I would ask for. I wished I could have more of the lovely rosemary potatoes from Cafe Trussardi, but the Fried Patate came out quite delicious as well and it was not surprising that my limited generosity only went as far as offering the travel buddy a single piece out of this delightful lattice.

Still, it was good to see the travel buddy enjoying his Black Cod with Saffron Sauce, Red Wine and Jerusalem Artichokes with such relish. He was full of compliments for the fresh and firm black cod, and insisted that I put it on record that it was "just amazing". So there you go.

The mini-desserts thereafter just kept coming, compliments of the gracious chef. First up is the Passionfruit Cake and Ginger Sorbet in Earl Grey Reduction, which was small but flavourful beyond our expectations.

The small tray of sweets was equally interesting, with ordinary gummies and peanuts placed beside absolutely heavenly White Chocolate Macarons and Italian Pistachios with Dark Chocolate.

This was a personal favourite. Earl Grey Chocolates that would wow any chocolate lover with a wonderful combination of quality tea and milk chocolate.

And, for something Asian, here's some Green Tea Walnuts for you to munch on.

We're not done yet, because here's something really unique and special. The Cosmopolitan on the Rocks brings shooters to a new level, as the popular alcoholic shooter comes on a bed of ice and is encased in a fragile chocolate shell. Put it in your mouth gently (and close it please!) and bite... The next few seconds would be quite indescribable. A rush to your head, that brief moment of euphoria, that momentary high... WOW.

For all that creativity from the kitchen we thought it would only be right to order more. My dessert of White Meringue with Hazelnut Chocolate, Crispy Vanilla Bread and Rhubarb Ice Cream was nothing short of impressive. The hazelnut chocolate within the meringue was delicious, the crispy vanilla bread was sweet from the crisp layer of caramel, while the rhubarb ice cream was unique, light and tastefully sour. Lovely.

The travel buddy's Creamy Tiramisu in a Glass was very unique too, and certainly not something you would expect of your typical and traditional Tiramisu. Not spectacular but still refreshingly different.

All-in-all, full marks for Il Ristorante Trussardi Alla Scala :)

Milan, Italy: Café Trussardi

01 July 2010

My very first dinner in Italy was an early and solo affair, but I was really glad that it started off the whole trip on a bright and positive note. The food at Café Trussardi, while priced a little higher than most, is outstanding, and the service here is deserving of compliments as well. It's located right next to Milan's world renowned opera house Teatro alla Scala and in a prime spot close to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele.

Café Trussardi belongs to the Milan-based Trussardi Group of fine dining and fashion, which also includes Michelin-star restaurant Il Ristorante Trussardi Alla Scala helmed by the talented Chef Andrea Berton. And if you're interested to know more about Il Ristorante Trussardi Alla Scala, well, that post will be right up... NEXT :)

Till then, let's bring our attention back to Café Trussardi, which is a really pleasant place to dine in. Modern in design, the café is designed as a contemporary glasshouse, with full-length glass windows to let you have a good view of the scene outdoors. Always interesting to observe the theatre-goers at the Teatro alla Scala.

Complimentary Bread Basket

My introduction to Italy's Complimentary Bread Basket was an "authentic" one, in the sense that it prepared me for what was to come for the rest of the trip. While aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, much of the bread you see here was cold and hard. It's not stale, it's just the way it is. Thank goodness for the delicious breadsticks and crackers.

Beef Sirloin with Roasted Rosemary Potatoes

Mmm... This was amazing. The Beef Sirloin was very well-grilled and just so full of flavour. It may have been a little fatty on some sides but generally it was very satisfying. The soft, tender and thick Rosemary Potatoes meanwhile were wonderful, full marks if there's ever a need for a score. The wine-based sauce wrapped it all up beautifully.

Tiramisu

This is one of the best Tiramisu that I had in Italy, with another notable one being from Florence's Osteria de' Peccatori. Excellent Tiramisu with generous amounts of chocolate powder and decadently soaked saviordi. Really good moisture to it as well.

Caffe Shakerato

The Caffe Shakerato perked up my evening in Milan for sure. Iced espresso that is shaken (not stirred -grins-) with a complex but refreshing mix of richness, bitterness and sweetness. Lovely.

Service
Excellent. Took time to make conversations as well.

Price
€22 for the beef sirloin with rosemary potatoes
€10 for the tiramisu
€8 for the caffe shakerato

Place
Piazza della Scala, 5,
Milan, Italy.

Milan, Italy: Pizzeria Di Gennaro

30 June 2010

Pizzeria Di Gennaro was a recommendation by the travel buoctopusesddy's Italian friend, who interestingly had described himself as quite a foodie too. The pizzas here turned out quite alright and definitely worth a try if you're clueless on where or what to eat whilst around Milan's busy shopping district. Straight from the wood-fired oven, the sides are crisp and lightly burnt, just the way I like it to be, with a slightly fluffier middle.

My Pizza Frutti di Mare (surprise, surprise) was delicious, though I spent a considerable amount of time observing the baby octopus perched on my pizza. No, it wasn't moving or dancing around, but what I thought was a baby squid turned out to be a baby octopus after all once the travel buddy pointed out its eight legs. It just stuck out, calling for some attention.

A close-up of the baby octopus before it got eaten up. Chewy.

Service
Very good.

Price
€10 frutti di mare pizza
€9 regina mozza pizza (ham and mushroom pizza, not reviewed)

Place
Via S. Radegonda, 14,
Milan, Italy.

Milan, Italy: Caffe Letterario

29 June 2010

Caffe Letterario at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan is memorable for the wrong reasons. After having had so many delightful meals throughout the trip, I finally hit a brick wall with this deceitfully established restaurant in downtown Milan. Service was lacking and the food was... edible but not worth a single calorie. You must be wondering why I'm still blogging about this place then, but this is just to let you know (in case you may have been thinking otherwise) that not everything here in Italy is absolutely delicious. I'd be lying to you if I were to go all out to make my trip sound extremely perfect by gushing over every single thing.

Bread

Or at least, what Italians think bread should be. This was so hard and tough that even my seasoned meat-tearing teeth could do little to tear it apart. Might as well keep it to hit those Indian con-men in front of the Duomo.

Zuppa di Cipolla alla Francese

I have little idea about the travel buddy's fascination for French onion soups, even more so when he has the tendency to order this in Italy. While it may look terribly simple and not necessarily appetising, the travel buddy thought it was more flavourful than expected.

Rissotto ai Frutti di Mare

You've read enough of my Italy entries by now to know that "frutti di mare" refers quite simply to seafood. While the seafood pastas and pizzas that I've had in Italy were all pretty good, the same however cannot be said for Caffe Letterario's risotto. The rice was just too moist and sticky, and the seafood ingredients turned out to be terribly tasteless.

Tagliatelle alla Bolognese

The travel buddy was looking for a repeat of the awesome tagliatelle that we had in Florence, but I think it's just too much to ask for from Caffe Letterario. A tad too watery bolognese sauce and the pasta was more tough than al dente. Pity.

Service
Poor, quite impersonal and hurried.

Price
€13 for the zuppa di cipolla alla francese
€19 for the rissotto ai frutti di mare
€17 for the tagliatelle alla bolognese
€7 for a 1-litre bottle of mineral water

Place
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele,
Milan, Italy.

Milan, Italy: Caffe Milano

28 June 2010

My trip in Italy actually started out in Milan, where I had a whole day to myself before I joined the travel buddy at Milan's Malpensa airport for a short flight to Naples. My first "meal" in Italy was actually a teatime snack of... yes you guessed it right, gelato, and some good ol' Italian cappuccino.

The Stracciatella gelato here was average at best, and in retrospect it paled in comparison to the other stracciatellas I had, especially in Florence. On the other hand, the Gusto Nocciola gelato was delicious, and I savoured every bit of this hazelnut delight. The texture of the gelato here is quite good, and it wasn't too icy or watery. Good balance.

Price
€4 for two scoops of gelato,
€6 for a cup of cappuccino.

Place
Along Via Dante, en route to Castello Sforzesco,
Milan, Italy.
