Bloggers Outing: Shashlik

17 January 2011

It's been a long while but I finally found time to meet up with some of the bloggers for dinner at old school Shashlik. I really did miss coming to such gatherings of food, cameras and good company, and was delighted to see them all again. The bloggers' roll of the evening is as follows:

Xin Li from The Four Moose
Frances from Foodies Queen
Jer Lin from Le Petit Connoisseur
Harris from The Simplest Aphrodisiac
Daniel and Lay Sian from Memoirs of Food
Fen and Yuan from Indulgence After Work-Out

And without further ado, let's head on to the food, food, food!

Buns with SCS Butter

The Warm Bun was soft and light, pure and simple.

Garlic Bread

The crispy Garlic Bread was a perfect accompaniment to the soups. Even more so when some of them were terribly bland and needed some finishing up to do (see below).

Mushroom Soup

The Mushroom Soup was sadly quite tasteless and diluted. It tasted like it was out from a can and had too much water added to it. I couldn't go past half of this.

Borsch Soup

Shashlik's Borsch Soup received more favourable comments from the table. The dollop of sour cream gave this tomato-based soup of potatoes, beef, carrots and cabbage a more creamy feel without being too over-powering.

Black Pepper Steak

My Black Pepper Steak, though tender, was overwhelmed by the thick sauce. There was nothing spectacular to it and in fact merely reminded me of a Jack's Place-type of steak, complete with the hot-plate. For the price I'm paying, I would take Astons Prime anytime.

Chicken Shashlik

The Shashlik, the Russian rendition of the Shish kebab, is where this restaurant got its name from, and is one of the most popular items on the menu. Here's what Xin Li had to say!

"The Shashlik of Chicken was served on a hot plate with mixed vegetables and fries. In humble opinion, it was palatable. The chicken was quite tender with a nicely charred skin. Unfortunately, at this price, I felt that it lacks flavor or the punch to set it apart from what a Western Food hawker can reproduce. In fact, certain parts of the chicken have a very mild gamey aftertaste." (Xin Li, 2010)

Chicken A La Kiev Imperial

Jer Lin's order of the Chicken A La Kiev Imperial was an interesting one, in large part because of that sprout of paper at the tip of the battered chicken. Lying on a thick toast, it seemed like a king on his bed.

"The chicken breast meat was satisfying tender, and was, interestingly, stuffed with butter. However, the toast was too stiff for my liking, though it was deep-fried to a golden crisp." (Jer Lin, 2010)

Chicken A La King

In contrast, Frances' Chicken A La King did not seem fit for royalty (unless perhaps it's for a really old king who needs a slightly softer diet). This is stewed chicken served with mixed vegetables and steamed rice. Not something I would order or enjoy.

Fish en Papilotte

Daniel and Lay Sian's order of the baked Fish en Papilotte seemed somewhat soft and healthy. I'll let you know what they thought about it when they get their post up heh.

Baked Ikan Kurau with Cheese

For a Russian-themed restaurant, they seem to have adopted the use of the Malay language too. The Baked Ikan Kurau with Cheese was like a baked rice dish but I'm not sure if it was good, or not.

Service
Good. On a packed evening, be prepared to wait a bit for your food to be served.

Price
$6 for the Mushroom Soup
$7 for the Borsch Soup
$26 for the Black Pepper Steak
$18.50 for the Chicken Shashlik
$19 for the Chicken A La Kiev Imperial

$21 for the Baked Ikan Kurau with Cheese

Astons Prime

12 January 2011

There's a lot of good steaks out there, but many of them are often on the pricier side of things and may not work for you if you're on a budget. For the best bang for your buck, I'd recommend Astons Prime over places like Jack's Place or Republic of Steak anytime. The Angus Ribeye that I had recently for example was delicious - tender, juicy and with a robust beefy flavour that can satisfy that occasional craving. All without breaking the bank as well.

Service
Very good.

Price
$20.90. Inclusive of GST and no service charge!

Place
The CentrePoint #03-45/46/47.

Beijing, China: Babela's Kitchen

19 December 2010

In an interview with Babela's Kitchen founder Chen Xingwei, the millionaire entrepreneur said that he wanted to venture into "Italian" cuisine and try to tap on the market success of the Pizza Hut chain of restaurants in China, primarily in Beijing and Shanghai. Knowing how he could somehow confuse Italian with Pizza Hut is enough for you to understand why Babela's Kitchen remains at a loss of what its "cuisine" (if there's any to begin with) actually is, especially with a menu that features items from pizzas to fried rice to steaks to Taiwanese-themed desserts. Nevertheless, it still manages to draw crowds of the impressionable youth who seem ready to lap up anything remotely modern or "Western".

Spicy Beef Fried Rice

Me, I just wanted something Asian (but not Chinese), and since I was quite sure that the pizzas and pastas would disappoint I settled for the Spicy Beef Fried Rice instead. This turned out edible enough, with hints of lemongrass and lots of (I believe) chilli sauce and peppers. It's just to fill me up before I head off to the shops again.

Thai Tom Yum Shrimp Balls

I was more curious than hungry over these Thai Tom Yum Shrimp Balls because I really wanted to know what would the Chinese rendition of tom yum be like. They turned out quite alright after all, and tasted even better when dipped into the sweet Thai chilli sauce.

Babela's Supreme Ice Coffee

Babela's Supreme Ice Coffee can only be described as such: over-hyped. It's just shaken iced milk coffee in another name. All-in-all, average Asian food in a fast-foodish way. Completely no idea why it's so popular, be it here in Beijing or in Shanghai.

.
.
.

NEXT UP! Four posts, four Peking Ducks. I'm hungry already.

Service
Average. Menu is in English.

Price
12RMB for the Spicy Beef Fried Rice
16RMB for the Thai Tom Yum Shrimp Balls
12RMB for the Babela's Supreme Ice Coffee

Manhattan Fish Market II

05 December 2010

Get crabby this Christmas, because we're gonna save some turkeys! Manhattan Fish Market gives a seafood-take on the traditional Christmas feast with a crab-filled menu featuring items like crab bisque, chilli crab spaghetti and even a crab platter. Alaskan King Crab, anyone? :)

Crabilicious Crab Bisque

The Crabilicious Crab Bisque was thick and creamy without being overwhelming. Not much crabmeat detected though, but I wasn't expecting too much for the price I was paying. Some at the table commented that there was a very slight sourish aftertaste but I didn't quite notice it since I spent most of the time dipping the fried mushrooms (below) in the soup. Thoughtful addition of croutons for the added texture.

Fried Country Mushrooms

I liked the Fried Country Mushrooms. These came fried to a crisp golden brown, and were all juicy and succulent inside. Nom nom.

Alaskan King Crab Platter

My favourite item at Manhattan Fish Market is actually the Flaming Platter for One, but I thought I should give the "dish of the month" a try. The Alaskan King Crab Platter comes with fried calamari, fried crab pincers (fishcake-like), chilli crab salad and of course, Alaskan King Crab legs. I thought this was okay, the crab legs especially, but the fried calamari and crab pincers were too... close on taste that it got quite monotonous after a while. My recommendation? Give an option to have your calamari grilled; I'm sure the staff would have obliged if you asked anyway.

Personally, I'm not a fan of having a cold dish side by side the other hot items, but this is what you get with the chilli crab salad right in the middle. I did feedback that MFM may like to consider having a hot salad option (same thing, just served hot instead of cold), but I was told it was really meant to be this way.

Grilled Gala Platter for Two

The table also had the Grilled Gala Platter for Two, which I thought fared much better than the other deep-fried platter - the Manhattan Seafood Platter for Two. I suppose it does come down a lot to personal preference, but grilled fish, prawns, calamari and mussels seem to go better with the (delicious) garlic-butter rice and fries. Hate to compare, but I prefer the rice here as compared to Fish & Co's.

Grilled Salmon Fillet

It's usually served with garlic herb sauce, but we asked for sambal instead and I thought it came out quite well actually. The thick slab of Grilled Salmon Fillet was sweet, fresh and very tender indeed.

Baked Fish in Garden Herbs

I'm afraid you will never find me eating something so healthy as this. Turned out to be a little too salty for the palate.

She's not meant for eating, but I couldn't resist posting a picture of my adorable niece Lucia here. Carrying her around made me want to be a Daddy as well haha!

*****

Thank you to Manhattan Fish Market for the earlier invite to a tasting session. As I (i) was leaving for Beijing when the email came, and (ii) had long quit the (free) food tasting scene, I left a note to say that I would be back in future. Of course you wouldn't expect me to have MFM honour its previous invite (and for me to bring more people now too!) and as much as they offered in all generosity to take the tab for all six of us I insisted otherwise. It's nice enough to have early info on their promotional menu, and for that I'm grateful :)

The Alaskan King Crab Platter may not have blown my mind away, but I'm sure I'm heading back to try that chilli crab spaghetti. The Pasta Shop's rendition of this is quite decent actually, but I'm curious to see what MFM comes up with. Look out for an update on this on my food-only Twitter.

Price
$55.90 for an Alaskan King Crab Platter Set (comes with two crab bisques, soft drinks and two servings of ice-cream)
$46.90 for the Alaskan King Crab Platter
$4.90 for the Crabilicious Crab Bisque
$7.90 for the Fried Country Mushrooms
$35.90 for the Grilled Gala Platter for Two
$17.90 for the Grilled Salmon Fillet
$14.90 for the Baked Fish in Garden Herbs

* Prices subject to the usual 7% GST and 10% service charge.

Place
Marina Square, #02-182.

Jones The Grocer

29 September 2010

Post-processed, lomo-type pictures courtesy of the Apple iPhone application Hipstamatic. I've been toying around with this app with the colleagues during lunch, but as you can probably tell from the blurry pictures more practice is definitely needed haha. Just as well for this post on Jones the Grocer at Dempsey actually, since the food here seems to have left a somewhat sketchy and forgettable impression.

The Jones' Open Wagyu Beef Burger was dull and monotonous. Dry bread and overdone crumbly patty... No sir, this ain't getting the green light from me. The balsamic vinegar did make a valiant attempt to save this dish, but it would have been asking too much of it surely. Quite simply, this burger tried too hard to be different, but it ended up looking (and tasting) like a confused sandwich!

Salads, no matter how dream-like or colourful, can never entice the red-blooded carnivore in me. Not one bit, not by a mile. But the lady who had this seemed to have no problems with the little garden before her, even with the pungent smell of (blue??) cheese wafting around the table. I'll face accusations of being a sexist but really it's something only the ladies can do with these salads. Give the real man a real burger with hot, crisp fries any day please.

Service
Very good.

Price
$26.50++ for the Jones' Open Wagyu Beef Burger.

Hanoi, Vietnam: Sofitel Plaza Hotel

13 September 2010

Sofitel Plaza Hotel did feel somewhat like a second home to me when I was there for almost two whole weeks in July. It definitely has the two basic things that you could possibly ask for after a long stretch of meetings for the day - a very comfortable bed, and of course, good, hot food. Simple needs, simple desires, all easily satisfied.

If I may add, one of the best things about my room was the view of the lake, a pretty and refreshing sight that greeted me every morning. Things like TVs and cable channels don't quite interest me much when I'm on overseas work trips - if I am not in my room working on my notes or reports, I would probably be chilling out with my colleagues at the executive Club Sofitel Lounge.

If you're thinking I would start rolling out traditional Vietnamese food in this post (and the few to come), I would have to disappoint you and say there isn't any. Most of the time I would be having my dinner in my room, much because I'm usually too tired to venture anywhere else. Other times, it would be at official dinners and I don't see the need to whip out my camera like a wide-eyed tourist haha...

Indonesian Nasi Goreng

The Indonesian Nasi Goreng was alright, I liked the overall flavour to it but did find the rice a tad too dry for my liking. Satay sauce was good.

If I had to compare, the Seafood Fried Rice at the Club Sofitel lounge was a bit better with it being filled with seafood ingredients - prawns, squids, fish and even some clams. A bit too heavy for breakfast though!

Next time, I would try the stir-fried noodles and of course, the quintessential Vietnamese pho, beef noodles! The pho took me a little getting used to (you know I'm not the biggest fan of soupy dishes) but I'm starting to like it quite a bit now.

Beef Burger
With fried egg and cheese

The Beef Burger was everyone's favourite comfort food after a long day of meetings. Tender beef patty, fried egg, melted cheese and crisp crinkle cut fries - a satisfying combination for any road warrior.

Pan-Fried Beef Rib-Eye
With sautéed new potato, mix of green lettuce and herbs from Dr Hung's garden from Da Lat, Phu Quoc green peppers and mushroom sauce

On one of the nights, well the last night actually, I wanted to give myself a treat because everything had gone smoothly. This being Vietnam, one of the most expensive items on the menu only came up to not more than S$30, and you can imagine a much higher price tag if you're having this in a reputable hotel in Singapore.

Don't judge by the price tag though, because this was a really thick and good slab of rib-eye. The mushroom sauce was addictive, and the potatoes were sweet and delicious. A pity the greens were lost on a carnivore like me, especially when they come from the fresh hills of Da Lat.

While the French may not be the most popular people in the minds of the Vietnamese (especially the older generation), remnants of their colonial occupation remain - architecture, language (the romanised quoc ngu) and even technology. The best thing that I think they left Vietnam with however, and this is only in the narrow context of food, is baking skills. The breads and croissants here are heavenly, freshly baked and so good even on its own. Looking forward to more in October! :)

Price
VND 171,000 for the Indonesian fried rice
VND 190,000 for the beef burger
VND 361,000 for the pan-fried beef rib-eye

* Prices subject to 10% service charge.
** The seafood fried rice is served free of charge, upon request.

Place
Sofitel Plaza Hotel,
Hanoi, Vietnam.

The Bistro @ NUSS Suntec City Guild House II

12 August 2010

You may have read about my dinner at NUSS Suntec City's The Bistro, but here is a post on its new August set menu that features a fusion theme. In case you hadn't known, entry to The Bistro is for NUSS members only, but of course you can always get a member to bring you in. The Suntec City Guild House also has a grill night on weekends, and I do hope I can find some time to try that soon!

Complimentary Garlic Bread

Dinner this time round at The Bistro was with Ms Sugar Elaine, who I must add is a grand pastry chef in the making. I have every faith in her that she will be a big name in the industry in the years to come.

Cream of Wild Mushroom

The Cream of Wild Mushroom was not too bad, the kind with grainy mushroom bits that I very much prefer to the white, soupy types. A good blend of portobello, shiitake and button mushrooms.

Grilled Prawns & Baby Scallops with Goma Chilli Jam on Agedashi Tofu

I felt a little "cheated" with my choice of appetiser. The name Grilled Prawns & Baby Scallops with Goma Chilli Jam on Agedashi Tofu was a bit of a misnomer in itself because there was only one prawn and one scallop to speak of. Simple but with little flavour to it.

Cured Sichuan Pepper Salmon with Sweet Wasabi Dressing on a Bed of Fresh Mesclun Leaves

Ms Sugar's choice appetiser looked pretty but probably too healthy for me haha.

Five-Spice Honey Roast Duck with Peppercorn Cream and Boiled Red French Beans

You know I love my duck, like the awesome duck confit at The Black Sheep Café, or the roast Nantaise duck from the Michelin-starred Il Ristorante Trussardi Alla Scala in Milan. The Five-Spice Honey Roast Duck with Peppercorn Cream is definitely something worthy of mention as well, because I really liked the tenderness of the duck as well as the addictive peppercorn cream sauce. I do wish there was more duck to indulge in!

Oven Roasted Chilean Cod Steak

Ms Sugar wanted a change for her main course, and chose the Oven Roasted Chilean Cod Steak from the à la carte menu. It was a big chunk of cod for sure, and she did say it was quite good.

Baked Almond Peach Tart with Vanilla Ice-Cream

I gave the set menu's dessert a chance but it turned out to be quite disappointing because of its (tiny) size. While I liked the flaky crust and sweet insides, it's just too small to be satisfying at all.

Orange Cheesecake

Best advice? Order from the à la carte menu, and besides all you pay is 50% of its labelled price. Ms Sugar's choice of an Orange Cheesecake was as good as my Mango Passion Cheesecake from my previous visit, and for almost the same reasons too. We liked how the sweet and tangy orange flavour (with orange bits too) mixed so well with the slightly sour and smooth cheesecake.

Service
Excellent.

Price
$28++ for the four-course set meal(comes with free flow soft drinks as well as coffee or tea at the end of the meal),
Additional $3.50++ for the cream of wild mushroom soup,
Additional $14.00++ for the oven roasted chilean cod steak,
Additional $3.50++ for the orange cheesecake.

Place
Suntec City, Level 5.

The Bistro @ NUSS Suntec City Guild House

10 August 2010

You've heard me shower praises on The Dunearn at NUSS' Bukit Timah Guild House, so I thought you might be interested in another place from NUSS - The Bistro at NUSS' Suntec City Guild House. Unlike The Dunearn however, access to The Bistro is strictly for members only, but you can always get a current member to take you there. The Bistro actually features a more varied menu than The Dunearn, and I realise many of the customers are actually here for the decent spread of Asian dishes. Most importantly to me, The Bistro provides a little sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, especially on weekend evenings.

Complimentary Garlic Bread

The Bistro serves up a monthly set menu that is priced at $25++ for a three course meal and $28++ for a four course meal. Courses can be changed to any item on the à la carte menu, but you would have to pay 50% of the item's labelled price. This post features July's menu, but stay tuned because the next post gives you a peek at August's menu!

San Francisco Inn Seafood Gumbo
Okra and Farmer's Greens simmered in Tomato Broth with Crab Meat and Shrimp

The San Francisco Inn Seafood Gumbo was decent, albeit a little watery. What I liked about it was the noticeable amounts of (real) crab meat and shrimp in the soup.

Los Angeles Cioppino
Fresh Tiger Prawn, Mussel, Crab Meat, Fish and Clams cooked in Tomato Basil Sauce on Pasta

I chuckled when my main course arrived because the prawns were much smaller than the ones shown on the menu. Still, the Los Angeles Cioppino proved to be much better than expected, as the seafood stew base was quite flavourful indeed and went very well with the pasta. Fresh ingredients too, I must add.

Southern Fried Cajun Fish Fillet with Citrus Butter Sauce

The dinner partner Daphne had the Southern Fried Cajun Fish Fillet, which I thought looked quite nice and wasn't overdone.

Mango Passion Oreo Cheesecake

The set menu's dessert (California Raisin Cheesecake drizzled with Fresh Coulis) did not sound very enticing to us, and so we decided to opt for a couple of other items from the à la carte menu. I liked my Mango Passion Oreo Cheesecake because it had a really good mix of the sweet, fruity tang of the mango bits, familiar chocolate goodness of the Oreos, and of course the sweet-sour taste of soft and smooth cheesecake. Yums.

Apple Crumble

Daphne's choice of an Apple Crumble came in a pretty generous portion and turned out to be quite satisfying as well. The crumble scored on both its crisp crust and delicious caramelised apple slices.

Service
Excellent.

Price
$25++ each for the three-course set meal(comes with free flow soft drinks as well as coffee or tea at the end of the meal),
Additional $3.85++ and $4.10++ for the cheesecake and crumble respectively.

Place
Suntec City, Level 5.
