Rome, Italy: The Scalini

02 June 2010

Everyone knows I had an unimaginable amount of gelato in Italy, but the best gelatos (or gelati) are beyond a shadow of a doubt to be found in the city of Florence. That said, some of you gelato fanatics may have heard of Rome's famed Tartufo, which is really delicious chocolate truffle gelato coated in bittersweet chocolate. Sounds awesomely heavenly, doesn't it? :)

The Scalini is a restaurant along Piazza Navona that claims to sell the "original Italian Tartufo ice-cream" and this unassuming-looking sweet treat is especially popular with locals and tourists alike. And if you doubt the Tartufo can create a lasting impression on you, think again - the travel buddy, not a big fan of chocolates mind you, actually remembered he had this (and thoroughly enjoyed it) fifteen years ago. It was him who directed us straight to The Scalini once we stepped foot into the Piazza.

Tartufo

I thought the whipped cream was unnecessary, but that's how the Italians are with their gelatos as they would always ask you if you would like yours with some cream. Still, underneath that... messy foam... is pure chocolate goodness. Chocolate truffle gelato, dark chocolate coating and milk chocolate under-layer: fantastic.

Of course, the chocolate lover loved it :)

Price
€5.

Place
The Scalini, Piazza Navona,
Rome, Italy.
