Thank you everyone for all your birthday well wishes to The Simplest Aphrodisiac! It's finally two years old and I do hope it would keep going strong :)
By way of a mini "celebration" I treated my friends to a few slices of cakes from Rive Gauche, a patisserie set up by the same people behind Tonkichi (Shaw Centre). Apologies for the photo quality below though, the cakes were close to melting by the time I reached my friend's place (after a long bus ride!) and so I didn't dare to remove the plastic wrap. Hurried pictures taken too because my friends were hovering hungrily and impatiently over the cakes haha!
Rive Gauche however did not deliver as much as I expected it to. The Guanaja (top left), like many hazelnut praline cakes, was fine, with a mix of bitter chocolate, chocolate sponge and a crispy biscuit layer. The Napolean (bottom right) was a favourite amongst my friends, because of the puff pastry, cream and fresh strawberries. This definitely proved to be so much better than the Strawberry Shortcake (top right), which turned out to be terribly boring with light sponge and whipped cream - surprisingly, it has been raved about quite a bit online. The Mocha (middle left) had the same problem of having too much "sponge", while the Mango (bottom left) cake was quite tasteless actually.
In the end, it's all about selection, and if I had to choose again, its quite clear the Guanaja and Napolean would win my votes.
Price
$6.00 for the guanaja cake
$4.20 for the napolean cake
$5.00 for the strawberry shortcake
$4.20 for the mocha cake
$3.80 for the mango cake
